Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band headlined Red Rocks on Wednesday night with support from The Infamous Stringdusters. The concert at the famed Morrison, Colorado venue featured plenty of collaboration during both group’s performances.
Phil emerged at the end of The ‘Dusters’ late-afternoon set for the fitting “Wake The Dead.” He then teamed with his band featuring guitarists Grahame Lesh, Ross James and Alex Koford as well as multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby, drummer Nathan Graham and vocalist Elliott Peck for two long sets. The ensemble began the first frame with a run of Grateful Dead classics including “Bertha,” “Jack Straw” and “Here Comes Sunshine.” Ross then led the troupe on The Band’s “The Shape I’m In” before guitarist Andy Falco and fiddler Jeremy Garrett added to a raucous “Cumberland Blues.”

The first set concluded with Phil singing one of his signature songs, “Box Of Rain” and Ross belting out Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves Of London.” ‘Dusters banjo wiz Chris Pandolfi joined Phil and The Terrapin Family Band for an expansive version of “Mountains Of The Moon” to start the second set. Then, Koford led Lesh and The TXR Band on The Rolling Stones’ classic “Monkey Man.” A few songs later, The Infamous Stringdusters dobroist Andy Hall lent a hand on “Eyes Of The World.” Phil and his group went on to fit a portion of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and all of “Throwing Stones” within “St. Stephen.”
Last night’s closing stanza concluded with the frequently paired “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider.” Phil took to the mic at the start of the encore to ask fans to become organ donors and explained he hopes to get back to Red Rocks more frequently in the future. After the intro, both bands took the stage for a gorgeous rendition of “Terrapin Station” to end the evening.
