Camp Winnarainbow — the children’s circus and performing retreat founded by counterculture icons Wavy Gravy and Jahanara Romney — celebrated its 50th anniversary on Wednesday with a star-studded benefit concert. The event at the Presidio Theatre in San Francisco saw performances by Peter Rowan, David Nelson, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi and others.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Steve Earle got the concert underway with a solo performance before Sam Grisman Project took the stage to perform songs in the catalog of Sam’s father David Grisman such as “Opus 38” and bluegrass standard “Shady Grove.”

With SGP acting as the backing band, New Riders of The Purple Sage’s David Nelson added to “Diamond Joe” before Peter Rowan emerged for his New Riders-covered song “Panama Red.”

Rowan stayed on as Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi came on to add to Peter’s poignant “Mississippi Moon” and “Dust Bowl Children.” Trucks delivered some tasty slide work on a resonator guitar on the former alongside warm, uplifting harmonies by the ensemble. The music continued with a collab between Steve Earle and SGP, which saw the group performing some of Steve’s standout songs: “Jerusalem,” “City of Immigrants,” “Galway Girl” and “Copperhead Road.”

Derek and Susan then returned for some favorites from the TTB catalog including “Midnight In Harlem” and the band’s cover pairing of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree.” Tedeschi also led her solo song “700 Houses.” Watch the ensemble on a gorgeous string band rendition of “Midnight In Harlem.”
