Pearl Jam Plays ‘Ten’ In Its Entirety In Philadelphia
By Scott Bernstein Apr 30, 2016 • 7:06 am PDT

Pearl Jam was honored with a banner hung at the Wells Fargo Center yesterday celebrating ten sell-outs in South Philadelphia. When the band saw the banner, they made the decision to perform their debut album, 1991’s Ten, in its entirety for the Philly faithful last night. The performance marked the second time Pearl Jam had run through Ten live following a 1992 show in Germany.
The Seattle rockers opened the show with the full performance of Ten including tour debuts of “Garden” and “Release.” Eddie Vedder then discussed the close relationship the band has with Philadelphia and the idea behind performing Ten in its entirety. The main set concluded with six more songs starting with the tour debut of “Breakerfall.” Pearl Jam’s encore started with the year’s first “Bee Girl” and also featured tour debuts of “All Or None” and “Throw Your Hatred Down.” All told, the band played 32 songs in Philly last night.
Last night’s full performance of Ten follows a full performance of Vs. that took place earlier in the tour and after the group played all of No Code and Yield at shows held during their last U.S. tour in the fall of 2014. When bassist Jeff Ament was asked by Rolling Stone about the chance of Pearl Jam performing a full album on this tour, Ament replied “I’ve never been a fan of that to be honest. Well, that’s not true. I saw Cheap Trick do three albums and that was amazing. But for the most part I haven’t been a fan of that. When we did those albums, we were on the plane going to the show and Ed said, ‘Hey, what do you feel about doing No Code tonight?’ And then we basically scrambled and learned the five songs we hadn’t played in 10 years right before the show. And it created, like, a good tension. By the second or third song, the fans started realizing what we were doing. We could sense that. I think the fact that we did it in Milwaukee and Moline, [Illinois,] was awesome. That was the greatest thing ever.” The tour continues in New York City on Sunday night.
