Neil Young Plays Career Spanning Set With Promise Of The Real In Pomona
By Scott Bernstein Oct 14, 2016 • 11:24 am PDT

On Thursday night rocker Neil Young played his penultimate show of the year with Promise Of The Real. Young and the band which features two of Willie Nelson’s sons performed 18 songs from various eras of Neil’s career including a handful of recently debuted tunes at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California.
Neil followed a similar script to the previous evening at the same venue, when he took the stage with the full band instead of the solo acoustic start to most of his concerts with POTR. Young opened with American Stars ‘N Bars track “Hold Back The Tears” for the first time ever and followed it up with “Someday” and “Comes A Time,” before treating fans to the second-ever rendition of “John Oakes.” The legendary performer was set to play “Old Man” ahead of “Someday,” but aborted the classic after a false start.
“John Oakes” was one of six new songs played on Thursday night as “Neighborhood,” “Peace Trail,” “Show Me,” “Indian Givers” and “Glass Accident” also made the setlist. On Wednesday Neil dusted off “Piece Of Crap” for the first time in 15 years and performed the tune again on Thursday. Last night’s show also included a rare Neil & POTR take on “Like A Hurricane,” one of just five played in 2016. Neil Young and Promise Of The Real finish out their year on Saturday night at the second weekend of the inaugural Desert Trip in Indio.
