Neil Young & Crazy Horse brought a series of five shows in California that marked the outfit’s first performances since 2014 to a close on Sunday night at the Fox Theater in Bakersfield. Young and his band dusted off three songs on Sunday they had yet to play at any of the run’s first four concerts.

For this run, the Crazy Horse lineup saw Young backed by bassist Billy Talbot, drummer Ralph Molina and multi-instrumentalist Nils Lofgren. As for now, there are no future Neil Young & Crazy Horse dates announced. Sunday’s finale followed three nights at Warnors Theater in Fresno and a Saturday night performance in Bakersfield. Young and his band opened with “Love To Burn” on Sunday one night after the song’s 2018 debut. “Mansion On The Hill” then fit into the two-slot following a two-show layoff.

A run of staples from the brief tour – “Country Home,” “Don’t Cry No Tears” and “Winterlong” – led into the recently-revived “The Losing End.” The evening’s first debut was “Speakin’ Out” off Tonight’s The Night, an album all four members of the band helped record. Young played piano on last night’s rendition, which was his first since June 9, 2009. Neil Young & Crazy Horse continued on with the run’s fifth versions of “World On A String,” “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’),” “Fuckin’ Up” and “Too Far Gone.” The Canadian rocker then strapped on an acoustic for the tender “Only Love Can Break Your Heart.”

Rockers “Cinnamon Girl” and “Cortez The Killer” gave way to the tour debut of “Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black).” The four-piece ended their main set with “Roll Another Number” and then encored with the initial “Down By The River” of the run. Neil Young & Crazy Horse took their time working through the improv-laden “Down By The River” encore.
