My Morning Jacket Fills Red Rocks Opener With Bust Outs & Guests

Louisville rockers My Morning Jacket kicked off a two-night stand at the iconic Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado on Saturday night. The band made their near three-hour performance one to remember by loading the setlist with rarities and welcoming a pair of special guests.

One of the biggest surprises of the night came early on, when MMJ dusted off It Still Moves track “Just One Thing” for the first time in nearly three years. Jim James & Co. last played “Just One Thing” way back on July 18, 2013. Next up was a version of “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” featuring Eric Johnson of openers Fruit Bats. Later in the set My Morning Jacket offered the 2016 debut of “Picture Of You” from their debut album The Tennessee Fire.

One-time MMJ member Johnny Quaid sat-in for portions of the main set starting with “Steam Engine.” The guitarist contributed to a pair of covers that My Morning Jacket hadn’t performed since the first One Big Holiday event in Mexico back in 2014, Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” and Erykah Badu’s “Tyrone,” among others. Jim James and his mates ended the main set with a tribute to Prince in the form of “Purple Rain,” before putting an exclamation point on the evening with a five-song encore that included both parts of “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream,” “Cobra,” “Highly Suspicious” and “Magheetah.” MMJ returns to Red Rocks tonight.
