[UPDATED] My Morning Jacket Debuts ‘Wish You Were Here’ Cover In Asheville

On Thursday night My Morning Jacket continued a short run of shows leading up to their appearance at Suwannee Hulaween in Live Oak, Florida tonight. The Louisville rockers’ performance at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, North Carolina contained a completely different setlist from the previous night in Chattanooga as MMJ went two shows in two different cities with no repeats, a rarity for the band.

My Morning Jacket treated Asheville to a 13-song main set followed by a lengthy encore than included seven more tunes. Jim James & Co. opened the evening with “In Its Infancy (The Waterfall),” the only song they’d play from their most recent album The Waterfall. The band then took fans on a tour of their back catalog as they performed a run of “Outta My System,” “Circitual,” “Evil Urges,” “I’m Amazed,” “Lowdown” and “Golden.” Up next was the evening’s biggest surprise as My Morning Jacket debuted a cover of “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd. This was the second Floyd cover debut in two nights, which both came just days after MMJ backed Roger Waters at the Bridge School Benefit concerts.

“Wish You Were Here” gave way to “Picture Of You” from the band’s debut album The Tennessee Fire, a song played only once prior in 2016. James then led the group on a version of his own “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.).” The set came to a close with a “Master Plan,” “Steam Engine” > “Run Thru” sequence. The encore started with “I Will Be There When You Die” and continued on with “Victory Dance” ahead of the rare “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 1” > “Pt. 2” one-two punch. My Morning Jacket concluded the night with obscurity “Cobra” followed by a cover of Erykah Badu’s “Tyrone” and a triumphant “One Big Holiday.” We’ll see what the band has in store when they play Hulaween tonight to finish their touring activity for 2016.
