My Morning Jacket Debuts Pink Floyd Cover & Busts Out Elton John Cover In Chattanooga

Last night My Morning Jacket played just their 14th show of 2016. The band came together at the Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga, Tennessee to begin a short run leading up to an appearance at Suwannee Hulaween in Live Oak, Florida on Friday night.

My Morning Jacket kicked off the show with “Compound Fracture” off 2015’s The Waterfall, but the Louisville rockers would only play two more tunes from their latest LP over the course of the 23-song performance. They instead put a focus on perhaps their most beloved studio album with six songs off 2005’s Z including “Dondante,” “Gideon,” “It Beats 4 U,” “Lay Low,” “Off The Record” and “Wordless Chorus.” Jim James & Co. also treated the Chattanooga faithful to five tracks from 2001’s At Dawn in the form of “Bermuda Highway,” “Phone Went West,” “Strangulation!,” “The Way That He Sings” and “X-Mas Curtain.”

Last weekend My Morning Jacket performed at and backed Roger Waters at this year’s Bridge School Benefits in Mountain View, California. The Pink Floyd bassist made a lasting impression on the guys as they unveiled their take on “Mother” as the penultimate song of Wednesday’s main set. James had his vocal delivery down and the crowd erupted at the line, “Mother should I run for president?”

Earlier in the evening My Morning Jacket had dusted off a rare Elton John cover as they performed “Rocket Man” for the first time since the 2014 installment of their One Big Holiday destination event. The last version of “Rocket Man” before OBH ’14 was way back on New Year’s Eve ’12-’13 in Boston. Wednesday’s concert concluded with a lengthy encore including a “Magheetah” closer. MMJ continues the Road To Hulaween run tonight in Asheville.
