My Morning Jacket Concludes Run Of Prom Shows In Athens On This Date In 2007

On March 6 and 7, 2007 Louisville rockers My Morning Jacket played a special set of shows at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia. Jim James & Co. presented the performances as prom-themed concerts and both band and many in the capacity crowd dressed the part of a ’50s “Under The Sea” high school dance.
Not only did MMJ dress in wild, pastel colored tuxedos, but they had the venue filled with streamers, Christmas lights and balloons. Musically, My Morning Jacket played sets heavy on their most recent album at the time, Z, and also threw in a number of covers they hadn’t performed before and haven’t performed again since.
My Morning Jacket opened the first show with The Dells’ ’50s doo-wop gem “Oh, What A Night” and began the encore by crowning a King and Queen of the “prom.” The band then debuted a cover of Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight” featuring a number of lyric changes. MMJ followed the Clapton tune with their lone rendition of King Harvest’s “Dancing In The Moonlight.” For the second show, the group focused on originals throughout the main set and then uncorked a seven-song encore that included covers of “Wonderful Tonight,” The Four Seasons’ “December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night),” Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” and “Crimson & Clover” by Tommy James & The Shondells. Check out audience recordings of both nights below:
