Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle performed a collaborative set at the Newport Folk Festival this past Sunday. Tuttle and Strings would deliver a set peppered with originals and bluegrass classics as well as a Cher cover.
The old roommates kicked off the show with Doc Watson’s “Black Mountain Rag” featuring a duet from Tuttle and Strings. Charlie Monroe’s “I’m Coming Back But I Don’t Know When” followed ahead of “Little Sadie” with Tuttle handling lead vocals.
The pair then played the Tuttle-penned tune “Over The Line” on which they welcomed fiddler Christian Sedelmyer who stayed on for the rest of the show. Up next was the murder ballad “Cold Rain & Snow” featuring Tuttle on lead vocals. Strings’ “Thirst Mutilator” then led into the guitar picker’s “Dust In A Baggie.”
A Tuttle song called “Friend And A Friend” was followed by a cover of Cher’s “Believe.” Ola Belle Reed’s “I’ve Endured” came next ahead of the set closer, Bill Monroe’s “Big Mon.” A take on Jimmie Skinner’s “Doin’ My Time” served as the encore.
Here’s a clip of the Cher cover “Believe” captured by Emily Ginsberg:
