moe. Plays First Of Two Tarantinoe. Halloween Tributes To Quentin Tarantino

Jam scene stalwarts moe. are known for their inventive Halloween themes and this year’s is a keeper. On Friday night the band played the first show of a Halloween weekend “double feature” at The Fillmore Philadelphia honoring the music found in the films of director Quentin Tarantino. moe. covered songs from Tarantino films’ soundtracks, re-titled some of their own compositions and dressed the part on Friday.

moe. kicked off the festivities with a clip from Pulp Fiction that led into their rendition of “Miserlou.” Tarantino used Dick Dale’s surf rock version of the song for his film and moe. performed a take similar to Dale’s. They then presented “Crab Eyes” as “Crazy 88” in reference to a fight scene in Kill Bill. Next up was moe.’s cover of “Cissy Strut” by The Meters, a song found on the Jackie Brown soundtrack. Guitarist Al Schnier then led the group on an original titled “Django” he penned for 2012’s Django Unchained. Friday’s first set came to a close with a cover debut of Stealers Wheel’s one-hit wonder “Stuck In The Middle With You” from the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack and a version of “meat.” re-worked as “gimp.” in honor of Pulp Fiction.

The five-piece began the second set with their first-ever take on Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride,” a song found on the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack. They worked their own “Bear Song” into the cover debut, though changed the words to “Wolf Song” in honor of the fixer from Pulp Fiction. moe. continued on with fan-favorites “Buster,” “Jazz Wank” and “Four” ahead of “Paper Dragon” re-worked as “Pussy Wagon” in reference to the bright yellow Chevrolet Silverado SS from Kill Bill. The evening concluded with an encore featuring covers of “Woo Hoo” by the 5.6.7.8.’s and “Godzilla” by Blue Oyster Cult. moe. returns to The Fillmore Philadelphia on Saturday night for the back end of the Tarantinoe. Halloween run.
