moe. Plays Final Show At Wetlands Preserve On This Date In 2000

Famed New York City nightclub the Wetlands Preserve helped launch the career of many jam acts including moe. The band made their debut at Wetlands in 1994 and played the venue dozens of times over the next few years. moe.’s final appearance at the club took place on this date in 2000 and was a three-set affair featuring a rare performance of the group’s Timmy rock opera.

Each set of moe.’s Wetlands finale had a theme. The evening’s first set was an acoustic performance, while the second set contained the complete Timmy rock opera and the third focused on covers. moe. opened with originals “Spaz Medicine” and “Time Again” before they served up a cover of CCR’s “Bad Moon Rising.” After quick versions of “Nebraska” and “Blue Eyed Son,” moe. debuted their take on “Shake Your Hips” by Jack Teagarden and end the unplugged performance with “Spine Of A Dog.”

Bassist Rob Derhak led the band in telling the story of Timmy based around the moe. original “Timmy Tucker.” Guitarist Chuck Garvey portrayed Timmy, while guitarist Al Schnier acted as Imelda Mae, percussionist Jim Loughlin served as “The Central Park Troll” and drummer Vinnie Amico played “The Virgin.” The Timmy rock opera performance at Wetlands included such moe. rarities as “Roll,” “Armageddon Jig” and “Strychnine Waltz.” moe. hadn’t performed the suite since 1995 and would retire the rock opera after a 2001 performance in Providence.

moe. kicked off the third set of their Wetlands finale with the Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated.” The band fit three more covers into the six-song closing stanza: “The Harder They Come” by Jimmy Cliff, Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Third Stone From The Sun.” For the encore, moe. said farewell to Wetlands with “Captain America.” The show at Wetlands on April 10, 2000 came in celebration of the band’s L live album which was released the next day.
