moe. kicked off their two-night livestream run on Friday night from Big Blue North Recording Studio in Utica, New York. The Buffalo-bred band busted out a cover of Lou Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side” for the first time in more than 20 years.

moe. got things underway at Big Blue Recording — which they moved to after their Miracle Mile drive-in concerts at Vernon Downs were canceled — with a couple classics in the somewhat rare “Johnny Lineup” (only played 72 times since 1992, as per Phantasy Tour) and the staple, “Akimbo” (in comparison played over 600 times since ’94). The band eased into the former before kicking things up a notch on the latter. The quintet continued with “Along For The Ride” before launching into a fully segued section that began with “Tubing The River Styx” followed by “The Pit” and “Dangerous Game,” the latter from the band’s 2020 album, This Is Not, We Are. A no huddle “Bearsong” would then encompass Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side,” which moe. had not played since 1998 and counted as the only cover of the evening, before returning to “Bearsong” to close out the first frame.

The second set began with the jam vehicle “Brent Black” which features some great guitar harmonies from Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey. Bassist Rob Derhak, Schnier and Garvey came together on vocals before Garvey took the song out with some jazz-fusion-esque soloing and jamming that led into a drums section from percussionist Jim Loughlin and drummer Vinnie Amico before the band headed into “Mar Dema.” moe. kept rolling with “Who You Calling Scared?” and “Four” before taking their first breather of the second set. Next up, “ATL” followed by “Can’t Seem To Find” for the first time in more than seven years. “Billy Goat” then returned to “Brent Black” to bookend the second set. For the encroe, “Plane Crash” segued into “Jazz Cigarette” to bring the evening to a close.
