moe. brought their first West Coast tour since 2020 to San Francisco on Saturday (January 20) and Sunday (January 21). Saturday’s show at The Fillmore saw the band offer their premiere performance of Led Zeppelin‘s “Going To California” during the opening stanza.
“Going To California” and a take on the Grateful Dead classic “Deal” within the second set on Saturday continued a trend of geographically-fitting covers at each night of the West Coast tour. moe. debuted their rendition of Stone Temple Pilots' “Interstate Love Song” in STP’s hometown of San Diego on opening night this past Thursday. The sextet then kicked off Friday’s show in Los Angeles with the Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway” before the location-appropriate covers on Saturday. moe. closed out last night’s concert at The Fillmore by dusting off “Take The Skinheads Bowling” for the first time since October 18, 2018. The song was originally released by Camper Van Beethoven, a band formed in Redlands, California that called San Francisco home for one stretch of their career.

moe. keyboardist Nate Wilson handled lead vocals on “Going To California” and wrote the setlist for Saturday’s show at The Fillmore. Penned by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin initially put out the pretty song about The Golden State in 1971 on their untitled fourth album, best known as Led Zeppelin IV. The cover debut followed the run of “Zed Nought Z,” “Crab Eyes,” “Bear Song” and “Okayalright” that started the night. moe. expertly segued from “Going To California” into their own ballad, “So Long,” featuring Wilson on flute. The six-piece devoted the last 28 minutes of the frame to a “Paper Dragon”/”Rebubula” combo linked with an impressive jam.
Guitarist Chuck Garvey helmed “Hi And Lo” for just the fourth time since suffering a stroke in 2021 to get the second set underway on Saturday. moe. then patiently worked through oldie “Yodelittle” before bassist Rob Derhak fronted the recently debuted original “Bat Country” and guitarist Al Schnier sang “Deal.” Garvey, Schnier, Wilson, Derhak, drummer Vinnie Amico and percussionist Jim Loughlin delivered a “McBain” featuring “Down Boy” within to close the set.
Late in the night, Al Schnier took a few moments to thank fans for sticking with moe. despite some hard times. Schnier led the band through “Letter Home” to start an encore that also included a cover of Deep Purple’s “Space Truckin’.” moe. resumes their West Coast tour on Tuesday, January 23 in Crystal Bay, Nevada.
