On Tuesday night, moe. brought their first multi-city run since ending an indefinite hiatus to the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, New Jersey. Guitarists Chuck Garvey and Al Schnier, bassist Rob Derhak, drummer Vinnie Amico and percussionist Jim Loughlin filled the two-set show with improvisation including a four-song second set. The five-piece opened with the brief instrumental “Defrost” and followed with oldie “Sensory Deprivation Bank.” Schnier then led his mates on “Bearsong” ahead of Garvey’s recently-debuted original “New Hope For The New Year.” moe. concluded the frame with a pairing of “Happy Hour Hero” and “She.”

The quintet focused on classic material over the course of the well-jammed second set in Montclair. Up first was an expansive “Buster” in which moe. brought the improv to near silence before Garvey led a build to a huge climax. moe. blew threw the normal ending and instead embarked on a segue into fan-favorite “McBain.” Loughlin shined on “McBain” ahead of a move into “Down Boy.” Then, moe. ended the set with an adventurous “Meat” that spanned nearly 30 minutes. When the band returned for the encore, Schnier presented his traditional “Al.nouncements” before the band dusted off “Raise A Glass.” moe. said farewell with a cover of “Godzilla” by Blue Oyster Cult. Photographer Suzy Perler was on hand to capture the action:
