Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs released a new single, “Dare To Dream,” featuring legendary singer-songwriter Graham Nash. The track is the lead single from the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers guitarist and his group’s upcoming album, Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits, arriving on June 14 via BMG.
Along with Nash, Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits also sees guest spots from Lucinda Williams, Chris Stapleton and Campbell’s fellow Heartbreaker keyboardist Benmont Tench.
The new record marks the third studio effort from Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs — Heartbreaker Steve Ferrone on drums, guitarist Chris Holt (Don Henley) and bassist Lance Morrison — following their 2020 studio debut Wreckless Abandon and 2022’s External Combustion.

Campbell co-produced the previous LPs with George Drakoulias and Martin Pradler who reprised their role on Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits. According to Campbell, the previous albums saw the group “trying to find our way as a rock & roll band. Now it’s down to great songs, the depth in the lyrics and chords.”
The guitarist also shared something Tom Petty once related to him.
“Tom said, ‘I love the English language. There’s so much you can do with it.’ I’m discovering that, too. Looking for rhyme schemes, the right word. At first it was a struggle. Now that door has opened. I’ve turned a corner.”
On Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits lead single, “Dare To Dream,” featuring Graham Nash, Mike said:
“‘Dare To Dream’ is a song about longing for hope. Lord knows we need more hope in this wicked world these days. Having Graham Nash sing on it was a dream come true for me.”
Graham was recently a guest on Campbell’s interview show on SiriusXM’s Tom Petty Radio, The Breakdown, where the guitarist recalled steeling himself to ask Nash to guest on “Dare To Dream.”
“I got up the courage to ask him, ‘Would you be interested in singing on one of my songs?’ He said, ‘Yeah, I’ll make your song better,’” Campbell laughs. “And he did! It sounds like the Hollies.”
