The SFJAZZ Gala 2017 will be held at SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco on January 18. That evening’s program will include Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart presenting his longtime collaborator and fellow percussionist Zakir Hussain with the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award.

A master tabla player, Hussain was an integral contributor to Hart’s 1991 album Planet Drum and the pair of percussionists also teamed up on the Global Drum Project and shared numerous live stages – including Grateful Dead shows – over the past several decades. Both drummers performed together in October at the University Of California Berkeley.

Next year’s SFJAZZ Gala will also feature musical performances by Hussain, Joshua Redman, Joe Lovano, Terence Blanchard, Stefon Harris, SFJAZZ Collective, Eric Harland, Bill Frisell, Cindy Blackman Santana, current SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Mary Stallings, John Santos, Kronos Quartet and other special guests.

The SFJAZZ Gala AfterJam Party was originally supposed to include a performance by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. A new lineup has been announced following Jones’ death last month. The new lineup includes Snarky Puppy with special guest David Crosby performing inside Miner Auditorium and Red Baraat performing inside the Joe Henderson Lab.
