Renowned soul singer Roberta Flack died on Monday, February 24 at age 88. Flack’s outstanding career, which included her best-known hits “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” influenced many who heard her impeccable vocal delivery, including British singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka who honored Flack during his concert last night at Amare Concertzaal in The Hague, Netherlands.
Kiwanuka paused his performance to address the audience at Amare Concertzaal and spoke about his admiration for Roberta Flack. Kiwanuka told the crowd:
“Today, I wanted to say a special respect to the great Miss Roberta Flack who passed away today. I don’t know if you know, but she’s one of the greats … And funny enough, I saw that today and I was like, it’s so sad. But she lived a long life and I actually remember making my first record. I was in the south of England, the south coast on an island called the Isle Of Wight …
“It’s tiny and it was off-season, so it was cold and rainy, which England sort of always is, but on the Isle Of Wight, no one’s there really anyway. So when it’s cold and rainy and there’s no holiday season, it’s like completely empty. So it was a unique time.
“Then you know you’re young and you’re trying to make music and you’re scared. The producer of the first record said, ‘Have you heard this album, it’s called First Take?’ I said ‘no.’
“He put the record on and it was Roberta Flack’s first album First Take, and I was like, ‘Wow, this is crazy,’ it was one of the best albums I ever heard to this day, even now. It ended up being the first record I bought in terms of a vinyl record. I just loved it so much.
“I listened to it loads when I was making my first album, so I want to dedicate this next song to – never met her but she’s one of the greatest – so this one’s for the late great Roberta Flack and also for you guys here.”
Kiwanuka then performed “Home Again,” which served as the title track to his acclaimed 2012 debut album. Last night’s concert kicked off Kiwanuka’s 2025 tour supporting his fourth album, Small Changes, which was released last November.
