Mastodon played their first show since the death of former guitarist Brent Hinds, who sadly died in a motorcycle accident on August 20. The band’s Brann Dailor took a moment to speak about Hinds at the end of Mastodon’s set for the Alaska State Fair at the Borealis Theatre near Anchorage.

Brent Hinds died tragically on Wednesday due to injuries suffered during a motorcycle accident in Atlanta. In March, Hinds had departed the band he helped found in 2000.

At the end of Mastodon’s performance on Friday, August 22 at the Alaska State Fair, Hinds’ fellow co-founder, drummer Brann Dailor, addressed the audience:

“We lost somebody very special to us yesterday. Brent Hinds, 25 years with us as our guitar player. One of the most creative, beautiful people that we’ve ever come across in this world, tragically left us. Very, very unfortunate. We loved him so so so very much. And you know, we had the ups and downs of a 25-year relationship. You know what I mean? It’s not always perfect. It’s not always amazing. But we were brothers to the end and we really loved each other.”

Dailor went on to share some memories of Hinds. Watch the band’s full tribute below:

As Dailor noted, the concert was a tough one for the band but also marked their first show in Alaska and the last of the 50 states the band had yet to perform in. Mastodon kicked off the show with “Tread Lightly” from their 2014 album Once More ‘Round The Sun.

The band also included favorites such as “The Motherload,” “Steambreather” and “Blood and Thunder” in their set. The music came to a close with another tribute to a departed metal great, Ozzy Osbourne, in the form of Black Sabbath’s “Supernaut.”
