Margo Price paid tribute to her fellow Farm Aid board member Neil Young at this year’s concert benefiting family farmers by covering his song “Homegrown” with Lukas Nelson and Particle Kid (Micah Nelson). Pro-shot video featuring Price’s “Homegrown” cover and the rest of her nine-song set from Hartford’s Xfinity Theatre on September 25 has been shared on YouTube by Farm Aid.
Neil Young canceled his Farm Aid appearance due to the surge in COVID-19 cases. The one-day event went on without him featuring performances from Price, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds, Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real, Allison Russell, Tyler Childers, Bettye Lavette, Jamey Johnson and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats.
Margo kicked off her set with “Letting Me Down” off her latest studio album, 2020’s That’s How Rumors Get Started, after a rousing introduction from Dave Matthews. Price and her band’s performance also included “Prisoner Of The Highway” from the LP as well as material from each of her other albums — 2016’s Midwest Farmer’s Daughter (“Four Years Of Chances” and “Tennessee Song”) and 2017’s All American Made (“A Little Pain” and “Weakness”).
The “Homegrown” cover came towards the end of the frame. Lukas dueted with Margo and played guitar as did Particle Kid on the title track from an album Neil Young recorded in the mid-1970s that went unreleased until 2020. Price then fronted her band on Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me,” which she dedicated to “anyone who feels like an underdog” as well as all the women in Texas. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter brought her set to a close with “A Little Pain.”
