The Magnetic Fields came to NPR HQ for a Tiny Desk Concert while on tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their album, 69 Love Songs. The band led by Stephin Merritt delivered eight songs from the 1999 three-disc collection in an almost completely acoustic set.
Merritt fronted the full original lineup of The Magnetic Fields — Sam Davol (electric cello), Shirley Simms (ukulele, vocals), Claudia Gonson (vocals), John Woo (acoustic guitar), Chris Ewen (acoustic piano) and Anthony Kaczynski (acoustic guitar, vocals) — to begin the Tiny Desk session with “Roses.”

NPR’s Robin Hilton further detailed the set:
Battling a head cold, Merritt cradled a stuffed animal through the performance (a white cat you can spot sitting on the Desk in a lot of Tiny Desk sets). “I don’t actually know whose cat this is,” he told the crowd, as he crooned multiple fan favorites, including “The Book of Love,” “I Don’t Want to Get Over You,” and “Come Back from San Francisco.”
