Watch Lukas Nelson & Toby Lee Cover A Bluesy Willie Nelson Classic In Boston

Lukas Nelson + POTR brought their fall tour to Royale in Boston on Tuesday. Lukas Nelson and company welcomed talented young guitarist Toby Lee for a rendition of the Willie Nelson classic “Night Life.”

The guest spot came as the penultimate song of Lukas Nelson and POTR’s set. As the story goes, Lukas Nelson’s father Willie Nelson wrote “Night Life” in the late 1950s while singing at a club in Houston six nights a week.

Nelson recorded the song but experienced various issues releasing it under his own name, including the bluesy tune not being “country.” Ray Price would have a hit with the tune in 1960 and Willie finally released it under his name in 1963. “Night Life” has since been performed or recorded by legends such as Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Dolly Parton and more.

“Night Life” was a staple for the late great B.B. King, a hero of blues prodigy Toby Lee. In Boston with POTR, the young guitarist added some bluesy stylings to the tune while Lukas handled lead vocals. Lukas Nelson and POTR launched the concert with “Entirely Different Stars” from their 2020 album, Naked Garden. The band then offered the title track to their 2023 LP, Sticks and Stones. Lukas and company would lean heavily on their latest record also performing “Everytime I Drink,” “The View,” “All Four Winds,” “Alcohallelujah” and “Wrong House.” Watch video of “Alcohallelujah”:

Along with “Night Life,” Lukas also dipped into his dad’s catalog with “Bloody Mary Morning,” which arrived on the tail end of original “Ladder Of Love.” Lukas Nelson and POTR wrapped their main set with the favorite “Find Yourself” before returning to encore with “Set Me Down On A Cloud” and “Something Real.”
