Lucy Dacus returns with “Planting Tomatoes,” a new song originally released as a Record Store Day exclusive, which is out now on streaming services. The poignant track marks the acclaimed singer-songwriter’s first new music since she put out her Forever Is A Feeling album in 2025.

The Boygenius member explores themes of grief and living in the present on “Planting Tomatoes.” Dacus spoke about the genesis of the song during an interview with i-D.

“I wrote it when we were playing in Berlin this past year,” Lucy explained. “I love the shows we play there, but I’m not comfortable there, and I think cities that I’m uncomfortable in are where I tend to write a lot of music.”

Dacus went on to reveal what led her to pen the lyrics: “I wrote ‘Planting Tomatoes’ in the green room based on some of the ideas I’d had for a while, about being older now than someone was when they passed, and thinking: ‘What would they be like at my age?’ I was reflecting on people I’ve lost and wondering about how easy it is for me to get caught up in thinking about death throughout the day. I just have to lock back into life by staying interested in my little ideas.”
