Though only open from March 1968  to June 1971, Bill Graham’s Fillmore East venue in New York City was home to many historic nights of superb music. The unofficial East Coast headquarters for the psychedelic rock movement of the era, The Fillmore regularly hosted the top rock ‘n’ roll acts of the time, including regulars The Allman Brothers Band and Grateful Dead. This week’s Spotify Playlist – Live At The Fillmore East – collects 15 live cuts recorded during that profound three year period and performed by musicians now thought of as legends.

“Dance To The Music” – a track from the recently issued Sly & The Family Stone Live At The Fillmore East October 4th & 5th 1968 – opens the playlist and features the band’s founding trumpeter Cynthia Robinson who passed away earlier this week. Other late legends appearing on the playlist include Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, B.B. King and Duane Allman who shines on “Whipping Post” from The Allman Brothers Band’s epic 1971 live LP.

The playlist is stacked with extended jams and spotlights recordings by West Coast groups like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Jefferson Airplane, Love and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Artists representing England in the Big Apple include Eric Clapton’s Derek & The Dominoes project as well as Faces. Bluesman Taj Mahal also contributes to the over two-hour long set which can be streamed below:
