Leyla McCalla Brings The ‘Sun Without The Heat’ Songs To Seattle’s KEXP

Leyla McCalla performed a live session at independent radio station KEXP’s studio in Seattle. The set featured songs from the singer-songwriter’s recently released album, Sun Without The Heat.
Issued in April by ANTI- Records, Sun Without The Heat McCalla’s is fifth studio album. The record was tracked over nine days at Dockside Studies in New Orleans. The multi-talented McCalla – a member of Our Native Daughters with Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah and Allison Russell and a former member of The Carolina Chocolate Drops – plays banjo, guitar and cello.

Those talents were on display during her session at KEXP. Hosted by DJ Ashley McDonald, the set saw McCalla backed by guitarist Nahum Zdybel, bassist Pete Olynciw and drummer Shawn Myers. The four-song setlist consisted entirely of songs from Sun Without The Heat, including “Take Me Away,” “Love We Had,” “Tree” and the title track.
