Lettuce members Erick “Jesus” Coomes and Adam Deitch appeared on JamBase partner Osiris Media’s Comes A Time podcast. The bassist and drummer respectively chatted with hosts Oteil Burbridge and Mike Finoia about Lettuce’s new album Unify, how they met, their influences and more.
The conversation kicked off with the bassists Coomes and Burbridge connecting about famed jazz bassist John Patitucci sitting in with Lettuce and the Patitucci signature bass model Jesus owns before talking shop about bass in general. The Lettuce members also give Oteil some props as a big influence when they were coming up.

The discussion leans heavily on influences, including how they’ve influenced each other as Deitch and Coomes talk about their time at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music where they met and where Lettuce was formed in 1992. The conversation also turns to Lettuce’s stage show, and Coomes reveals the interesting way Deitch leads the jams.
The discussion returned to influences as the hosts and Lettuce members discussed hip hop, with Coomes and Deitch diving into how much it has influenced Lettuce’s sound. There’s also a great story involving collaborator Kanye West. The podcast ends with a fascinating discussion about how musicians deal with nerves on stage and Oteil relates a story he’d never told before about Gregg Allman.
