Les Claypool’s Bastard Jazz Plays New Orleans
By Scott Bernstein May 13, 2019 • 9:55 am PDT

Bassist Les Claypool led a rare Les Claypool’s Bastard Jazz performance on May 3 at the Joy Theater in New Orleans during Jazz Fest. Claypool, percussionist Mike Dillon, drummer Stanton Moore and saxophonist Skerik focused mostly on improvisation over the course of the two-plus hour concert.
The quartet treated the capacity crowd to a free-flowing jam before performing “The Seven” off Primus’ 2017 album, The Desaturating Seven. Another segment of improv followed. Then, Claypool invited his The Claypool Lennon Delirium band mate Sean Ono Lennon up for “Mr. Wright” from the project’s 2016 debut studio album, Monolith Of Phobos. One more bout of jamming, this time on Primus’ “Jerry Was A Race Car Driver,” came ahead of the “D’s Diner” finale.
