The Lemonheads announced their first new album of original material in two decades, Love Chant, in April and have now shared the first preview of the record. “Deep End” contains contributions from Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis and arrived alongside a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Sad Cinderella.”

The Lemonheads recorded “Deep End” in Brazil with producer Apollo Nove at São Paulo’s A9 Áudio. Along with guitar from Mascis, the track contains backing vocals from frequent Lemonheads collaborator Juliana Hatfield. “Deep End” is accompanied by a music video, also captured in São Paulo by directors Carlão Busato and Luigi Parisi.

“It’s never been so painless making a video,” Lemonheads bandleader Evan Dando stated. “Everyone working was really great. The endless sidewalk goes really well with the song.”

The double single also contains a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Sad Cinderella.” The 19 years between Lemonheads 2006 self-titled album and the new recorded saw the band led by Dando releasing two cover albums, Varshons and Varshons 2. The former contained a take on Townes Van Zandt’s “Waiting Around to Die.”

On the new Townes cover, “Sad Cinderella,” Dando duets with Nashville singer-songwriter Erin Rae. Listen below:

The Lemonheads kick off a tour of Australia and New Zealand on Friday (May 16). Scroll down for the band’s itinerary and ticket info.
