WinterWonderGrass Steamboat was held over the weekend in the bucholic Colorado ski town of Steamboat Springs. One of the highlights of the 13th annual festival came on Saturday, when Leftover Salmon premiered their “Will It Grass?” covers set.
Leftover Salmon reimagined favorites from artists spanning multiple genres for the 12-song performance. The set included non-bluegrass songs requested by fans. Selections run the gamut from Soundgarden to Green Day to Alabama Shakes to Radiohead to Iron Maiden and points in between.
Co-founder Vince Herman explained how the set would work after the band took the stage. “We’ve got a bunch of tunes in this here bingo turner. We’re going to pull them out and see if it grasses. You are the judge of whether it grasses or not,” Hermann told the crowd. A volume meter was held up following each song to gauge which cover grassed the most.
The jamgrass stalwarts opened their first-ever “Will It Grass?” performance with a take on Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” a song they hadn’t covered since 2024 as per Setlist.FM statistics. Next came LoS debuts of “American Idiot” by Green Day and Men At Work’s “Down Under.”
Leftover Salmon then performed Traffic’s “The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys,” a cover they dusted off earlier in the week. From there, the sextet rolled through first-time covers of “My Uncle” (Flying Burrito Brothers), “Hold On” (Alabama Shakes) and “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” before they busted out their version of The Allman Brothers Band classic “Southbound.”
The set continued in heavy fashion with LoS’ cover of Iron Maiden’s “Run To The Hills.” WinterWonderGrass festival director Scotty Stoughton came to out to front the ensuing take on Beck’s “Loser.” Leftover Salmon wrapped the performance with “Takin’ Care Of Business” (Bachman-Turner Overdrive) and “Running Down A Dream” (Tom Petty).
“Low Spark” and “Loser” were the songs that grassed the most according to a fan report. Leftover Salmon’s Sunday set featured guest appearances from Andy Frasco, Billy Failing and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes.
