Leftover Salmon hosted a pair of Thanksgiving Weekend performances filled with special guests at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado on Friday and Saturday nights. Peter Rowan, Dave Bruzza and Billy Failing sat-in with LoS on Friday, while Saturday saw the band joined at points by Rowan, Failing, Dave Johnston, Eli Emmitt, Nick Forster and Silas Herman.
The Colorado-birthed band kicked off their first set of the weekend sans guests for a run of staple originals that included “High Country,” “We’ll Get By,” “Get Me Outta This City” and “Liza.” Banjoist Billy Failing of Billy Strings‘ band then added to covers of the instrumental “Ernest T. Grass” and Memphis Slim’s “Blue And Lonesome” as well as originals “Show Me Something Higher” and “Aquatic Hitchhiker.” Failing stuck around while Peter Rowan joined in for takes on The Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” and Jack Bonus’ “The Hobo Song” to close Friday’s opening stanza.

Rowan came back out with LoS to get Friday’s second set underway with his own songs “Dance With No Shoes,” “Walls Of Time” and “Panama Red.” Greensky Bluegrass guitarist Dave Bruzza and Billy Failing emerged a few tunes later to help out on a cover of Bill Monroe’s “Can’t You Hear Me Callin’.” Failing stayed on stage for Flatt & Scruggs’ “Dear Old Dixie” and Salmon originals “Bend In The River” and “Better” to end the frame. Peter Rowan then led Leftover Salmon, Dave Bruzza and Billy Failing on the evening’s “Midnight Moonlight” encore, another tune that he wrote.
Once again, Leftover Salmon went it alone at the beginning of Saturday’s concert. Failing, Yonder Mountain String Band banjoist Dave Johnston and Drew Emmitt‘s son Eli Emmitt (on electric guitar) all took the stage towards the middle of the set to augment LoS on Junior Brown’s “I Hung It Up” and original “Midnight Blues.” Billy Failing also contributed to the ensuing versions of Bob Dylan’s “Simple Twist Of Fate” and Jimmy Driftwood’s “He Had A Long Chain On.” The latter featured Nick Forster, host of the eTown radio show, on electric guitar. Both Failing and Rowan added to the pairing of “High Lonesome Sound” and “Free Mexican Airforce” that ended Saturday’s first set.
Leftover Salmon and Peter Rowan treated fans to “Fetch Wood Carry Water” at the start of the second set on Saturday. Failing then returned for the rest of the night. Highlights included Rowan leading “Land Of The Navajo,” Silas Herman adding to “Funky Mountain Fogdown” and Peter coming back for “Pulling The Devil By The Tail” and “I’m Gonna Love You.” The encore saw Rowan and Failing join LoS on a “Reuben’s Train” medley that featured portions of “Hot Corn, Cold Corn,” “Whole Lotta Love” and “Free Bird.”
