While supergroup KVHW only toured for a two-year period between 1998 and 1999, the quartet left a strong impression. The group consisting of guitarists Steve Kimock and Ray White, bassist Bobby Vega and drummer Alan Hertz played a stellar concert showing what they were capable of 20 years ago today at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon.
The four-piece performed a mix of songs from Kimock’s various projects and choice covers. Up first in Portland was a White-sung rendition of “It’s Your Thing” by The Isley Brothers. Then, KVHW worked “Ring Around The Moon” within “Nine” and performed Kimock classics “Why Can’t We All Just Samba?” and “Five B4 Funk.” Next, Hertz was featured on “If You Only Knew” ahead of a set-closing “Point Of No Return.”

KVHW kicked off their second set in Portland with an exploratory rendition of Kimock’s “It’s Up To You” and then dug into a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Spanish Castle Magic” sung by White. From there, the quartet performed the pairing of originals “Same World” and “Shotgun House” before fitting “Poonk” within The Meters’ instrumental “Cissy Strut.” The KVHW staple “Spring Water” brought the second set to a close. The band said farewell with a wild encore that began with The Allman Brothers Band favorite “Whipping Post,” continued with a gorgeous version of “My Favorite Things” from The Sound Of Music and concluded with Kimock’s “A New Africa.”
