Singer-songwriter John Prine brought his recently initiated tour in support of his new album The Tree Of Forgiveness to the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia. Locally-based guitarist Kurt Vile was also on the bill Saturday night and sat-in with the renowned singer-songwriter during Prine’s headlining set.
Prine and his band opened their performance with “Six O’Clock New” from the 71-year-old guitarist’s 1971 self-titled debut. Next came The Tree Of Forgiveness single “Knockin’ on Your Screen Door” followed by longtime favorites “Bruised Orange (Chain of Sorrow)” and “Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore.”
Prine set also featured The Tree Of Forgiveness songs “God Only Knows,” “Summer’s End,” “When I Get to Heaven” and others. The show also included classics such as “Hello In There” and “Angel From Montgomery. Prine went solo for a performance of “Souvenirs” and The Tree Of Forgiveness track “Lonesome Friends of Science” before Vile emerged for a duet on “Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness.” Vile stuck around for “Sam Stone” that saw the rest of the band return for its conclusion.
