King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Dive Into EDM Abyss On New Album ‘Alien Metal’

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announced their 28th studio album, Alien Metal, which arrives later this summer via p(doom) Records. Out today is “Level 5,” the lead single from the forthcoming LP and its accompanying video.

Alien Metal expands on the electronic direction introduced on 2023’s The Silver Cord and developed during the band’s recent “rave shows.” The material on the eight-track record was composed using the group’s touring modular synthesizer, named “Nathan.” King Gizz drew from techno, hardcore, house and jungle music while retaining their psychedelic identity.

The upcoming album follows years of aborted attempts and restarts. “We’ve never scrapped so much material as we have for this album,” explained frontman Stu Mackenzie. “Entire albums, entire universes that were formulated, created, recorded, deleted and started again.”

A key moment in the creation of Alien Metal came during a late-night improvisation session. The resulting jam became the foundation for the entire album, as each song was spawned from the same source performance.

“It sounds so crunchy, but also beautiful,” Mackenzie said.

“Alien Metal goes really hard, but it also goes to really interesting places,” added King Gizz’s “techno head” . “And it feels unique – it feels like us, still.”

King Gizz also added a second “Rave Show” in New York City. After playing their previously announced dates at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens August 20 – 22, the band will play a “Rave Show” at Brooklyn’s Under The K Bridge Park on August 23 with .VRIL. Tickets go on sale Friday, July 10 at 10 a.m. ET.
