The BreedersKim Deal released her first solo single under her own name via 4AD. The late Steve Albini engineered “Coast” at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago.

Kim Deal fully realized “Coast” in 2020 after witnessing The Grape Whizzers performing Jimmy Buffett’s beach anthem “Margaritaville” with “revelatory levels of low self-esteem” at her friend Mike Montgomery’s wedding. “Coast” has its roots, however, all the way back in 2000 when Deal took a respite on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket, an odd place for her to vacation. “I hate the sun, beach, and watersports,” she said.

Renowned engineer and musician Steve Albini, who sadly died in May, helped capture “Coast.” Albini engineered The Breeders 1990 debut album, Pod.

“Coast” contains contributions from drummer Lindsay Glover and Breeders alum bassist Mando Lopez. Kim’s twin sister and Breeders bandmate Kelley Deal plays guitar. Horns are provided by Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza.
