The song was originally written and recorded in 1979 by Robert Hazard. It was Lauper who issued it as the lead single from her 1983 debut album She’s So Unusual that turned the tune into a worldwide mega-hit. The Musgraves and Williams cover came a day after the Grammy winner honored Selena by performing “Como La Flor” during a concert in Houston.
