As reported, a bout of “wicked flu” has temporarily sidelined guitarist Jake Cinninger of Umphrey’s McGee who held a show without him last evening at College Street Music Hall in New Haven, Connecticut. Pre-announced guest saxophonist Joshua Redman sat-in for much of the show that featured a bust out cover and a tribute to Butch Trucks.
UM’s lone guitarist Brendan Bayliss the quintet through and opening sequence of “Nipple Trix” > “Slacker.” After a nicely jammed “Wellwishers,” Bayliss altered the lyrics to “Sociable Jimmy” to reference the current U.S. President and followed it with “ “Sweetness” > “Mad Love.” At that point the band once again became a six-piece as Redman emerged for “Speak Up” and the set closing “Booth Love.”
Redman was on stage for all of set two beginning with “Der Bluten Kat” that featured “Final Word” played within. He was also there to add sax to “Day Nurse,” “Wife Soup” and the instrumental rarity “Dear Lord.” A dub version of Pink Floyd’s “Breathe” closed out the set. Keyboardist Joel Cummins began the encore with a solo piano arrangement of The Allman Brothers Band classic “Jessica” in tribute to their late drummer Trucks. The five-person UM lineup came back for “Uncommon” and a bust out cover of “Down Under” which was last played in 2014 and broke a 270 show absence.
UM and Redman will perform together again tonight at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine featuring an all improvised second set. View photos from Adam McCullough, full show audio and audience-shot video from last night below:
