John Mayer performed his song “Roll It On Home” reportedly for the first time since 2019 last night at Chicago’s United Center. The tour debut came at the onset of the evening’s encore.
Mayer is touring in support of his latest solo album, 2021’s Sob Rock. The Dead & Company guitarist is backed by a band made up of vocalists Tiffany Palmer and Carlos Ricketts, guitarists Isaiah Sharkey and David Ryan Harris, keyboardists Jamie Muhoberac and Greg Phillinganes, bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Steve Ferrone and percussionist Lenny Castro.
Mayer played six Sob Rock songs last night, including opening the first full-band set with “Last Train Home” and closing it with “I Guess I Just Feel Like,” with fellow album track “Shot In The Dark” coming mid-set. The mostly solo acoustic mid-show set started with a cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home.” Mayer followed with his “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967,” “In Your Atmosphere” and closed out the acoustic portion of the concert with the Sob Rock track, “Shouldn’t Matter but It Does.”

The second full-band set began with Mayer’s well-known “Your Body Is A Wonderland,” followed by “Rosie” and making its second appearance on the tour, “Assassin.” Mayer then filled out the set with “The Beautiful Ones,” “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room,” “Wild Blue” and “Gravity.”
Mayer and his bandmates kicked off the encore with “Roll It On Home,” which was last played live on October 18, 2019. The song comes from Mayer’s 2017 solo album, The Search for Everything. The night drew to an end with the Sob Rock cut, “New Light.”
