John Mayer Offers ‘Friend Of The Devil’ Tour Debut In Detroit

John Mayer hit Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Friday night, where the Dead & Company guitarist presented the tour debut of the Grateful Dead’s “Friend Of The Devil” (a day after Jerry Garcia’s birthday) during his encore. Mayer has been working Dead material into his setlists this tour including “Deal” and “Fire On The Mountain.”

Mayer got things underway with “Love On The Weekend” from his latest album The Theory Of Everything ahead of “Vultures,” “Who Says,” “Something Like Olivia” and “Clarity.” Mayer returned to TTOE with “Changing” before heading through “No Such Thing,” “Speak For Me” and “Helpless.” Mayer wrapped up the first set with “Still Feel Like Your Man.”

Mayer kicked off the second frame with an acoustic section that began with a cover of Beyonce’s “XO” followed by oldies “Neon” and “Your Body Is A Wonderland.” Mayer then ran through “Belief,” “Moving On and Getting Over,” “Edge Of Desire,” “Rosie” and “In the Blood.” Next, Mayer sandwiched “Slow Dancing in A Burning Room” with two covers: Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones” and Pete Townshend’s “Let My Love Open The Door.”

“The Age of Worry” and “Waiting On The World To Change” came ahead of the set-closing “Gravity.” Mayer would reemerge for the encore of “Friend Of Devil” and “New Light.” Watch audience-footage of “Friend Of The Devil” via The Zalewski Law Firm below:
