John Legend swung by 30 Rock on Tuesday for an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The renowned singer-songwriter enlisted the show’s house band, The Roots featuring Black Thought, and a choir for a powerful “Used To Love U” performance.
The EGOT winner originally released “Used To Love U” in 2004 as the debut single from his first album, Get Lifted. Legend spoke with host Jimmy Fallon yesterday hours after confirming the Get Lifted 20th Anniversary World Tour 2025 and talked about the extensive trek.

John Legend also discussed contributing to Lauryn Hill’s instant classic The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill album. Legend played piano on “Everything Is Everything,” which earned him his first recording credit.
“I didn’t know if the song was going to make the album. I didn’t know if my parts were going to make the album. And so I was just waiting to find out, and I get a call from A&R at Columbia Records, which is where Lauryn signed, and they asked me how to spell my name for the album credits,” Legend recalled. While credited under his birth name of John R. Stephens, he settled in on the pen name John Legend before releasing Get Lifted.
“John Legend’s a lot better. I didn’t become John Legend for a while. But I was John R. Stephens on Track 13 of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” he explained.
Legend offered a fresh version of “Used To Love U” on The Tonight Show. Black Thought delivered a rap in reprising a role he has on a remix of the track featured on the deluxe 20th anniversary edition of Get Lifted.
