Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Welcomes Stuart Bogie & Debuts Bob Dylan & MMW Covers In Denver
By Andy Kahn Apr 29, 2017 • 9:37 am PDT
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead opened a two-night Colorado run last night with a performance at the Ogden Theatre. JRAD went beyond the music of the Grateful Dead on several occasions Friday evening and were joined by special guest Stuart Bogie on saxophone and clarinet at various points as well.
“Jack Straw,” “Truckin’” and a version of “Viola Lee Blues” with a “Duo Jam” between drummer Joe Russo and keyboardist Marco Benevento and a “Here Comes Sunshine” jam got the first set underway at the Ogden. Next came the debut JRAD performance of Bob Dylan’s “Tell Me, Momma,” which was sung by guitarist Scott Metzger. A take on the Dead’s “China Cat Sunflower” was trailed by Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” and the set closer “I Know You Rider.”
A jam into the commonly partnered “Lost Sailor” and “Saint Of Circumstance” began the quintet’s second set. “Scarlet Begonias” led into the recently debuted Almost Dead original “Keeping It Simple” which gave way to “Fire On The Mountain.” Bogie then emerged for the remainder of the show, adding sax to a rendition of “Dancing In The Streets” that saw the JRAD debut performance of Medeski, Martin & Wood’s “Bubblehouse” played within. A sax-aided “Franklin’s Tower” closed out the second set with Bogie switching to clarinet for the “U.S. Blues” encore.
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead performs in Colorado again tonight at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield. The show with openers MMW was moved from Red Rocks due to inclement weather in the area. Watch clips from Friday’s show here:
