Joe Russo’s Almost Dead :: 11.08.18
The Wiltern :: Los Angeles

The final Joe Russo’s Almost Dead run of 2018 started on Thursday night with the first of two shows at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. Drummer Joe Russo, guitarists Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger, keyboardist Marco Benevento and bassist Dave Dreiwitz kicked off the evening with a quick romp through “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion),” which they dropped into “Man Smart, Women Smarter.” The first extended jam of the night came out of “Throwing Stones.” JRAD then presented the familiar pairing of “Help On The Way” and “Slipknot!” The lengthy “Slipknot!” bled into a frisky “Jack-O-Roe” sung by Hamilton. An unusual and well-jammed “Greatest Story Ever Told” brought the frame to a close. All the while, the music was accompanied by the Mad Alchemist liquid light show.

Thursday’s second set began with a gorgeous “Candyman” featuring Hamilton on lead vocals. Metzger then channeled Ron “Pigpen” McKernan on “Mr. Charlie.” The seamless start to the set continued with an emotional “He’s Gone” and tender “Loser.” JRAD covered plenty of ground during the jam that emerged out of “Loser” before kicking into “The Eleven.” The band closed out the second set with Bob Dylan’s “Tell Me, Momma” and then returned for a “Samson & Delilah” encore. Almost Dead returns to The Wiltern on Friday. A webcast is available via nugs.tv. Photographer Robert Chapman was on hand in L.A. to capture the action.
