Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Debuts The Kinks Cover In Austin

By Nate Todd Sep 15, 2019 9:13 am PDT

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead closed out their three-night Texas run at the Moody Theater in Austin on Saturday night. JRAD would debut “Waterloo Sunset” by The Kinks as well as dust off a Chuck Berry cover and “Alabama Getaway.”

The Grateful Dead-focused act kicked off the show with “Black Throated Wind” which contained a “Jack Straw”-like jam. The band would then bust out “The Festival” by Chuck Berry for the first time since 2013 with keyboardist Marco Benevento handling lead vocals. JRAD would continue with “St. Stephen” which led into a jam reminiscent of Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way,” a first for the band, before returning to “St. Stephen” which contained a “Peaches” by Presidents Of The United States tease. “Dancing In The Streets” featured a jam of Howlin’ Wolf’s “How Many More Times” done in the style of Led Zeppelin. “Mississippi Halfstep” closed out the first frame.

“Alabama Getaway,” first time played since early 2016, got the nearly continuous second set underway. “Shakedown Street,” which was left unfinished and contained a “King Solomon’s Marbles” tease, led into “I Need A Miracle” which featured a little foreshadowing with a “One More Saturday Night” tease ahead of “Cassidy.” A jam that contained elements of “Jack Straw,” “China Cat” and “Cassidy” segued into the classic pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider.” “Not Fade Away,” which contained an “I Want Candy” tease, closed out the second set.

JRAD would retake the stage for an encore of “Waterloo Sunset” which featured Joe Russo on lead vocals followed by “One More Saturday Night” to close out the evening. Check out the first and second set openers below:
