Jimmy Herring Takes Jerry Garcia Guitar For A Spin
By Scott Bernstein Mar 16, 2015 • 12:20 pm PDT

A video posted to the band’s Instagram account shows Herring using Jerry Garcia’s Travis Bean TB500 guitar that fetched nearly $250K in a 2013 auction. Garcia used the guitar extensively in the mid ’70s both on stage and during recording sessions. The axe features Travis Bean’s trademark aluminum neck, employs an onboard effects loop and was Garcia’s third most-used guitar behind “Tiger” and “Wolf.” A sticker laid on the guitar reads “Ass, Grass or Gas/Nobody Rides For Free.” Julian’s, the auction house that put the axe up for sale a few years back, claims the guitar was used at “approximately 69 concerts in late 1977 alone, including: approximately 35 Grateful Dead concerts, a benefit for Greenpeace, and as he toured around the country with the Jerry Garcia Band.”
The video on Instagram shows Herring performing “Morning Dew” with drummer Duane Trucks and bassist Dave Schools before Saturday night’s show in Spokane:
Widespread Panic’s Saturday show in Spokane featured the debut of new original “Jamais Vu,” the second new original unveiled during the young tour. Check out an unofficial look at the lyrics here. The band’s performance at Spokane’s Fox also included the first version of “Airplane” with Duane Trucks on drums, while last night’s show in Seattle saw Panic dust off “Proving Ground” for the first time with Duane. Also notable is that all three Widespread Panic Spring Tour shows thus far have started with a cover. Next up for the Georgia rockers is a Tuesday night performance at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon.
