Jimmy Herring Helps Allman Brothers Band On ‘Les Brers’ In 2009

As we mentioned earlier this week, nearly two years after The Allman Brothers Band played their final show, it’s still weird for March to roll around without the group’s annual March Madness Run at NYC’s Beacon Theatre. At least we can re-live some of the many incredible shows Gregg Allman and Co. played at the venue such as a guest-filled masterpiece from this date in 2009.

The Allman Brothers Band’s Beacon runs always featured special guests, but the group took it to a new level to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2009. Eric Clapton, Levon Helm, Trey Anastasio, Susan Tedeschi, Buddy Guy, Bruce Hornsby, John Popper and Billy Gibbons were just some of the more than 60 musicians who sat-in during the March 2009 residency. On this date in 2009, the Allman Brothers Band delivered a barn-burner at the venerable NYC venue that featured guest spots from Thom Doucette, Ron Holloway, Jimmy Smith, Bernard Purdie, Jerry Jemmott, Tedeschi, Mike Mattison and Widespread Panic’s John Bell and Jimmy Herring at various points in the evening.

The night’s second set climaxed with a scorching rendition of the instrumental “Les Brers In A Minor” featuring Herring. Jimmy was no stranger to the Allmans’ stage as he was the band’s special guest for Summer Tour 2000 following the departure of founding member Dickey Betts. Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks and Jimmy Herring made for quite the triumvirate of guitarists on one stage and each adds their own imprint to “Les Brers.” Watch pro-shot footage of the 16-minute masterpiece:
