Jason Isbell Performs Drive-By Truckers Rarity ‘TVA’ In Nashville

Jason Isbell performed a solo set yesterday at a rally for Tennessee U.S. Senate Democratic candidate Phil Bredesen. The guitarist’s appearance at Marathon Music Works in his current hometown of Nashville featured a rendition of the Drive-By Truckers rarity “TVA.”
The rally also featured performances by Ben Folds and Delta Rae. Prior to the event, the National Republican Senatorial Committee issued an official statement labeling Isbell and Folds as members of the “unhinged left.” Isbell jokingly referenced the issue, telling the audience that he was “hinged as hell.”
Mid-set came the offering of “TVA” — the song’s title is in reference to the Tennessee Valley Authority that was established by the U.S. federal government to aid the region during the Great Depression — which first appeared on the 2009 DBT outtakes release The Fine Print. A live version appeared on the 2012 Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit release Live From Alabama, but currently rarely appears in Isbell or Truckers setlists.
