New Third Man Records Vault Package Features Jack White & The Go

Third Man Records has announced its Vault Package #41. For this installment of the quarterly subscription series, Jack White‘s label is offering the 20th-anniversary remix edition of The Go‘s Whatcha Doin’, plus pressings of the Ferdinand Attic Demos LP and the Alternate Studio Takes 7-inch, both of which contain completely unreleased material. The package also includes a 10-inch by 8-inch photo book called The Go In Black And White.

Vault Package #41 dives into the archives to revisit The Go, a Detroit project featuring lead vocalist Bobby Harlow, rhythm guitarist John Krautner, drummer Mark Fellis and bassist Dave Buick. Specifically, the release sports a 20th-anniversary remix edition of Whatcha Doin’, which featured White on lead guitar. For the upcoming re-release, White remixed the record himself using the original reel-to-reel tapes in partnership with Sub Pop, the original label that released the 1999 album, as well as Buick and engineer Bill Skibbe. It is pressed on “Summer Sun” colored vinyl at Third Man Pressing in the Cass Corridor, Detroit.

As noted in a statement:

Utilizing the créme de la créme of studio gear unavailable to the band back in 1999, the likes of Fairchild compressors and Neve consoles helped to crank the album into overdrive. While the original album release utilized takes of the tracks “Meet Me at the Movies” and “You Can Get High” that were early, quasi-demos laid down at White’s Detroit home, this reissues dusts off the previously unheard studio versions of those tunes, of which White describes “…Movies” as “up until that point, my favorite guitar solo I had ever recorded.” Ultimately incorporating a handful of mix suggestions from Bobby Harlow, the end product is a revelation into the true power this line-up of the Go held in the brief 8-month span they were together.

The Ferdinand Attic Demos offer a pre-studio run-through of all the tracks that would ultimately be featured on Whatcha Doin’. Pressed on “Mottled Carpet Remnant” colored vinyl, the collection offers “a raw, unfiltered view of the band woodshedding before stepping into the clock-is-ticking confines of a traditional studio.” It also includes the exploratory collaboration between White and Harlow on what would eventually become “Time For Moon.” While compiling the Vault Package, White also unearthed alternate takes on “Keep on Trash” and “Time For Moon,” which have been remixed as 7-inch single. Finally, the soft-cover photo book, The Go In Black And White, sports visuals from two of Detroit’s best photographers from The Go’s 1999 heyday. It includes shots from Patrick Pantano and Doug Coombe.
