Actor/musician Jack Black attended the Los Angeles premiere of the feature film Borderlands in which he co-stars alongside Cate Blanchette, Kevin Hart and others. Black was asked about the future of his band Tenacious D in the wake of the recent controversy caused by his bandmate Kyle Gass.
Last month, Black announced the cancelation of Tenacious D’s tour in response to Gass’ controversial comment about the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump. The incident occurred during a Tenacious D concert in Sydney, Australia during which Gass responded “Don’t miss Trump next time” after he was presented with a cake to honor his birthday and asked to make a wish.

“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday [in Sydney],” Black stated following the incident with Gass. “I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour and all future creative plans are on hold.”
Gass also shared a statement in the wake of his controversial comments:
“The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake. I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.”
While walking the yellow carpet at last night’s Borderlands premiere, Variety’s Marc Malkin asked about Tenacious D’s future.
“We need to take a break,” Black responded. “Everybody needs a break sometime. And we’ll be back.”
Black revealed he’s been in contact with Gass since the incident in Sydney. “Yeah, we’re friends,” Black said. “That hasn’t changed.”
Black, whose outfit last night included wearing a necklace with the Pick Of Destiny prop from Tenacious D’s 2006 film project, further described his feelings about Tenacious D, which was formed by Black and Gass in 1994.
“I love Tenacious D,” Black said from the yellow carpet. “It’s probably my favorite job, if you can call it that. It’s a work of art, it’s my baby.”
