Ivan Neville Joins Widespread Panic In New Orleans

Widespread Panic closed out their Halloween run at UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans on Saturday night. The band welcomed NOLA legend Ivan Neville for the last three songs of the first set.

WSP kicked things off with a continuous block of tunes beginning with “Rumble” followed by “Goin’ Out West,” “Greta,” “Climb To Safety,” “Aunt Avis” and “Junior.” After “Makes Sense To Me,” Neville joined Panic for “Sleepy Monkey,” a cover of late hometown hero Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” and a rendition of the Grateful Dead’s “Cream Puff War” to close out the first frame.

The second set got underway with “Radio Child.” The set also saw the band dusting off The Beatles’ “The Ballad of John And Yoko,” last time played on June 17, 2015 in Boston, as well as a “Run Like Hell” jam in the middle of “Driving Song.” The second set closed out with “Action Man.”

Widespread Panic retook the stage for another bust out of the late great Col. Bruce Hampton’s “Basically Frightened,” last time played on New Year’s Eve 2017. “Blue Indian” and “Postcard” came next ahead of the second encore and evening closer “I Trusted You.” Interestingly, as Panic Stream pointed out, all WSP originals were from the Michael Houser era.
