Iron & Wine & Band Of Horses’ Ben Bridwell Take On Kendrick Lamar & SZA’s ‘Luther’

Iron & Wine (Sam Beam) and Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses shared a cover of Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s song, “Luther.” The track comes from Beam and Bridwell’s upcoming covers EP, Making Good Time.

The five-song Making Good Time will arrive on September 12, a decade after the childhood friends released their first covers collection, 2015’s Sing Into My Mouth. The follow-up EP was recorded in North Carolina with producer Brad Cook and his studio house band.

Along with “Luther,” the forthcoming EP presents the pair’s interpretations of songs by Roxy Music (“More Than This”), U2 (“I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”), Foreigner (“I Want To Know What Love Is”) and boygenius (“Ketchum, ID”).

“Luther” appeared on Kendrick Lamar’s 2024 album, GNX. Lamar and SZA, who contributed to “Luther” and the album closer “Gloria,” are currently on tour together.

Bridwell shared the statement below regarding the “Luther” cover recorded for the EP:

“Working with Sam again feels like a homecoming in so many ways. To circle back 10 years after Sing Into My Mouth and expand the project is a wonderful dream relived.

“I chose to focus on ‘Luther’ after kinda hitting a wall wondering which songs would be best to contribute. After much hand-wringing, it hit me, ‘Why not just do my favorite song?’ I’d been playing the then newly released GNX album on repeat and that song in particular with my girls to the point of exhaustion.

“About a week later, Kendrick strangled the game at the Super Bowl and ‘Luther’ would soon become a #1 hit for so many weeks. Seems a little late now to share this as it’s been many months since recording it, but I knew that damn song was headed for big things. Praying we did some justice.”

Band Of Horses and Iron & Wine previously confirmed a co-headlining 2025 Fall Tour across the western United States. Each show of the 11-date run will feature “three unique sets each night.”
