Howlin Rain founder Ethan Miller mined 15 years of archival recordings culminating with the 15-track compilation, Lost At Sea: Outtakes, Rarities & Tales From The Deep. The new single “Drown A Drain” was released in advance of the album set to arrive on November 29 through Silver Current Records.
“I wanted to compile the record so it would have impact like our grandest, wildest, most unabashed studio album,” Miller stated. “I left out home demos, and songs from quiet corners, sketches, etc., in favor of fully formed, fully finished, studio level tracks from front to back. Lost At Sea is intended to be something that you can pour yourself into and get swept away in.”

The album consists of tracks recorded during sessions for the Howlin’ Rain albums The Russian Wilds, The Dharma Wheel, The Alligator Bride, Mansion Songs and Live Rain, as well as the lost Ethan Miller Band sessions.
Several covers appear on Lost At Sea, including The Russian Wilds outtake version of Leon Russell’s “Out In The Woods” featuring Luther Dickinson of North Mississippi Allstars on slide guitar, plus Live Rain outtakes of “Here Comes Sunshine” by the Grateful Dead and “Shine A Light” by The Rolling Stones.
The pending rarities compilation also includes three tracks from the shelved Ethan Miller Band album, recorded in late 2011 with the Once And Future Band rhythm section of bassist Eli Eckert and drummer Raj Ojha. Additional Lost At Sea contributions were made by Scarlet Rivera (violin, Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue), Joel Robinow (keyboards, Once and Future Band), Isaiah Mitchell (guitar, Earthless/The Black Crowes), Tim Green (producer, engineer, musician) and Rick Rubin (producer/American Records), among several other.
“This collection holds the sounds and musical work of all kinds of people from my past and present,” Miller added. “From Rick Rubin to some of the musicians who have had the biggest influence on my musical life, to folks I’d nearly forgotten I’d played with and have never seen again since the moments you hear on these recordings. In some weird way, we were all in this thing together, and now here’s a document putting the behind-the-scenes of this extended project in perspective.”
Newly shared single, “Down a Drain” – an outtake from 2012’s The Russian Wilds – was recorded by Miller on electric guitar, Robinow on Hammond B-3 organ and Clavinet, Ohja on drums and Cyrus Comiskey on bass. Stream the track produced by Tim Green and mixed by Rick Rubin below:
